Kuwaiti artist Aseel AlYaqoub has won the seventh Ithra Art Prize for her installation “Flora Incognita,” she tells Arab News. She described the award as giving her a validation she did not realize she had been seeking, after years of working without a gallery, a grant, or any certainty that her research-heavy work was reaching people.
According to the supplied description, “Flora Incognita” consists of invented hybrid desert plants escaping the colonial-era archives that named them.
The prize comes with a $100,000 grant. The work is to join the permanent collection.
