A major exhibition of modern and contemporary Egyptian art is bringing nearly nine decades of the country’s artistic history to audiences in Washington, challenging perceptions of Egypt as a culture defined primarily by its ancient past.

The show, “El-Marsam: Modern and Contemporary Art from Egypt,” presented by the Middle East Institute’s Art Gallery, features 49 works by 29 artists and runs through Dec. 11. It is curated by Egyptian-American art professional Heba El-Kayal.
