JEDDAH: Before the start of the Arabian Gulf Cup, Saudi footballer Hammam Al-Hammami was asked whether the tournament could become his true breakthrough with the Saudi national team. His answer was simple: “I hope so.”

Just over two weeks later, the 22-year-old winger was celebrating the Arabian Gulf Cup 27 title with Saudi Arabia. He scored in the final against the UAE and was named the tournament’s Best Player.
